Where are the HIGHEST tides?
What causes
the tides?
The world's highest tides occur in the Bay of Fundy's Minas Basin. The Minas Basin is in Nova Scotia, Canada. Wolfville, Nova Scotia is at the head of the Minas Basin and so is perhaps the best place in the world to see its highest tides. Specific places to see these tides are under the "Where are the Highest Tides" link.
With the exception of the Tidal Bore, experiencing, at any particular moment, during “the highest tides” phenomena, can be a little like “watching grass grow”. Perhaps, if one could have watched an Egyptian Pyramid being built, it would have been a similar experience. For both phenomena, it’s the enormity of the project that is sensational. One is certainly in awe of this natural tidal process, when one realizes that sheer volume of water that “Mother Nature” moves in and out of Fundy’s Minas Basin casually, a couple of times a day. And, during the process, at mid-tide, more water is running between Cape Split, King’s County, Nova Scotia and Port Greville, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, than all the rivers in the world.
Wolfville, Nova Scotia, is a wonderful town. Not only is it near the places to enjoy an interaction with “The Highest Tides, it is in the centre of one of the Canada’s newest wine regions. Wolfville is an historic, university town just an hour from Halifax. For over a century, Wolfville has been one of Nova Scotia’s premier tourist destinations. Tourism was developed very early in the 20th Century by the Dominion Atlantic Railway so visitors could experience Historic Grand Pre, the site of the Acadian Deportation in 1755 made famous by Longfellow’s poem Evangeline. Wolfville is known by Nova Scotians for its high quality restaurants, inns, B&B’s and shops.
U.S. President John F. Kennedy famously said, “A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats!” A visit to the upper basins of the world renown Bay of Fundy may cause you to notice and reflect that all tides do not lift all boats equally. Thus, not only can you have a wonderful environmental experience coming to visit “The Highest Tides”, but you may also have pause to reflect on Kennedy’s words with respect to global challenges with regard to economic and social issues!
